Original engravings from the 17th–19th century.
This original hand-colored engraving presents two iconic “armoured” fishes — the Longhorn Cowfish (Lactoria cornuta) and the Yellow Boxfish (Ostracion cubicus) — rendered with the precise line and disciplined colour typical of early nineteenth-century zoological illustration. The plate balances scientific intent with strong decorative presence, transforming unusual anatomy into a composed and collectible image.
Unlike more familiar Mediterranean species, these subjects were prized for their unmistakable silhouettes: rigid bodies, geometric contours, and protective carapace-like forms. In the pre-photographic age, such plates offered European readers a vivid encounter with marine diversity — where nature appears almost engineered, and beauty emerges from structure.
The plate belongs to the Italian edition of the Dizionario di Scienze Naturali (Florence, Battelli press), a monumental encyclopedic enterprise in which Pierre Antoine Prêtre contributed some of the most refined zoological engravings of its time.

The composition is deliberately spare, allowing the striking textures to dominate. Above, the cowfish is described through warm ochres, russet bands, and intricate facial patterning, with a sculptural density that emphasises its protective armour. Below, the boxfish reads as a compact, faceted volume: a honeycomb lattice of scales rendered with patient regularity and soft tonal modelling.
The blank anatomical outlines at the sides function as quiet scientific punctuation, reinforcing the plate’s documentary purpose while preserving a calm, gallery-like clarity. The overall effect is architectural: a study in surfaces, geometry, and restrained ornament.
Lactoria cornuta and Ostracion cubicus belong to groups historically admired for their “armoured” bodies — fishes whose rigid external structure suggested a natural form of protection and design intelligence. For nineteenth-century naturalists, they represented the ocean as a realm of engineered solutions: bodies shaped not for elegance alone, but for survival through form. Their cultural appeal endures because they feel simultaneously zoological and symbolic — emblematic creatures where nature’s inventiveness becomes immediately visible.
This engraving forms part of the historic Dizionario di Scienze Naturali, a nearly two-hundred-year-old encyclopedic undertaking once preserved within a noble library and today housed in the Sacchetti Collection. Each sheet reflects an era when scientific ambition was matched by artisanal excellence — from the crisp authority of the engraved line to the luminous hand-colouring applied individually to every impression.
