Original engravings from the 17th–19th century.
This original hand-colored engraving presents a refined pairing of coastal fishes: the Bearded Croaker (Umbrina cirrosa) and the fish identified on the plate as “Cinglo.” Executed with controlled linework and luminous restraint, the composition reflects the encyclopedic ambition of early nineteenth-century zoology — to depict the sea not as spectacle, but as a complete, classifiable world.
The plate is visually elegant in its simplicity: two profiles, two temperaments. The upper fish is described through rhythmic striping and warmer tonal accents, while the lower figure appears more streamlined and understated, offering a calmer counterpoint. Together, they create a balanced study suited both to scientific reading and to decorative display.
The plate belongs to the Italian edition of the Dizionario di Scienze Naturali (Florence, Battelli press), with zoological subjects engraved and hand-coloured to a standard rarely matched in later scientific publishing.

The upper fish carries the composition: strong diagonal striping, warm yellow-green body tones, and a crisp dorsal structure that lifts the silhouette. The lower figure is more linear and quietly naturalistic, with a slender profile and softened transitions between gold, olive and pale silver.
Negative space is used as an intentional framing device, giving the plate a calm, almost modern clarity. The hand-colouring remains disciplined — never overpowering the engraved structure — which reinforces the print’s “cabinet” character: scientific, composed, and collectible.
Umbrina cirrosa, the Bearded Croaker, is deeply tied to Mediterranean coastal life and traditional fisheries, making it culturally resonant as well as zoologically significant. In nineteenth-century encyclopedias, such familiar species anchored scientific knowledge to lived maritime experience. The companion figure labelled “Cinglo” reflects the historical nature of taxonomy within early printed sources: names could vary by region and period, yet the goal remained consistent — to record recognisable marine forms with clarity for study, teaching, and collection.
This engraving forms part of the historic Dizionario di Scienze Naturali, a nearly two-hundred-year-old scientific enterprise preserved today in the Sacchetti Collection. Each plate reflects an era when knowledge was communicated through craft: engraved copperplate line, careful plate layout, and hand-colouring applied sheet by sheet.

The engraving is in excellent antique condition, with clean margins and a fresh, well-preserved hand-coloured surface. Printed on original smooth wove paper (non-laid), consistent with Italian scientific editions of the period. No watermark has been observed. The impression is clear and the colour remains vibrant, with no visible losses.
