Wild Heath and the Grass Eggar

This original 1774 hand-colored engraving by Jacob L’Admiral depicts the Grass Eggar (Lasiocampa trifolii) in a richly animated heathland setting. Multiple adult moths hover above flowering vegetation, while the robust larval form curves prominently across the foreground.

Unlike more minimal plates, this composition is scenographic and immersive. The flowering stems rise in delicate vertical rhythm, punctuated by warm red blossoms that contrast beautifully with the blue and amber tones of the moths’ wings.

The plate balances movement, color, and botanical detail with refined clarity.

Visual and Aesthetic Analysis

The adults display velvety wings in deep blue, rust, and ochre tones, set against an airy white ground that enhances luminosity. The large larva in the lower register introduces compositional weight and dynamic curvature.

The interplay between fine engraving line and controlled hand-coloring gives the sheet both scientific precision and decorative presence.

Scientific Context

Lasiocampa trifolii, commonly known as the Grass Eggar, was of particular interest to eighteenth-century naturalists for its distinct larval form and habitat specificity.

L’Admiral’s 1774 publication systematically documented metamorphosis stages, reflecting the Enlightenment fascination with transformation and classification.

Heritage Stories
