King Parrot and Multicolored Parakeet: Vibrant Harmony and Exotic Elegance

This original 19th-century hand-colored engraving depicts two parrots, identified on the plate as the “Perruche Lori Papou” and “Perruche omnicolore”, drawn and engraved by the Pauquet brothers and published under the direction of Charles Lemaire. The composition exemplifies the most vibrant and decorative dimension of exotic bird illustration.

Executed within the tradition of “Peintes d’Après Nature”, the birds are rendered with remarkable immediacy — their rich plumage and poised interaction transforming the scientific subject into a visually compelling and highly decorative image.

Visual and Aesthetic Analysis

The composition is structured along a vertical branching perch, creating a clear and elegant arrangement. The upper bird, with its intense red plumage and green wings, acts as a strong focal point, while the lower parakeet introduces a softer yet equally vibrant palette of pink, green and yellow.

Colour is the defining element of the engraving. The deep reds, luminous greens and warm yellow tones are arranged in balanced contrast, creating a palette of exceptional richness. The variation between the two birds enhances visual interest while maintaining overall harmony.

The elongated tail feathers and subtle movement of the wings introduce a sense of fluidity, while the clean background emphasizes the clarity of the forms and the brilliance of the colours.

The overall effect is bold yet refined — a composition that stands out for its chromatic richness and decorative strength, making it particularly effective as a focal antique print.

About the Species

Exotic parrots from tropical regions were among the most admired subjects in 19th-century Europe, valued for their vivid coloration and elegant forms. Their suitability for hand-colored engraving made them central figures in richly illustrated natural history publications.

Such representations reflect both scientific curiosity and the decorative appeal of tropical fauna, combining accuracy with visual splendour.

Heritage Stories

This engraving belongs to the refined tradition of 19th-century natural history illustration, published under the direction of Charles Lemaire and brought to life through the work of the Pauquet brothers. Working as a collaborative engraving atelier, Hippolyte and Polydore Pauquet combined scientific precision with a refined decorative language.

Created within the visual culture of “Peintes d’Après Nature”, the composition preserves both the vitality of the subject and the expressive richness of hand-applied colour, resulting in a print that is both scientifically grounded and visually striking.
